The Busking Chase features its first ever non-musical busker!
As I have promised previously, the new season of the Busking Chase will feature not just buskers who play music, but also buskers who do street theatre and visual arts. There is only a small portion of buskers that is dedicated to these art forms, but they are very diverse when it comes to variety. These include circus acts, caricaturists, balloon artists, magicians and even typewriter poets. And some of these have built a strong local following for bringing the fun to the streets, not just buskers who serenade the audience with their music.
The first non-musical busker I would like to introduce is Caroline Cornelius-Jones, also known as CJ The Bubble Girl (@cjthebubblegirl). Born in the UK and a Singapore permanent resident, CJ is a professional bubble artist ("bubbleologist", to be exact) who creates bubbles. Not just ordinary bubbles, but giant soap bubbles. And she can create multiple giant bubbles in one go. You have to come down to one of her shows to believe it.
When not performing at events, CJ can be found busking at the Marine Cove in East Coast Park, especially during the weekend mornings and public holidays. This place is especially popular with the kids, as there is a large playground and F&B outlets nearby and there is a grassy area suitable for bubble shows. CJ also performs at birthday parties, shopping malls as well as corporate and community events, taking her bubble performances to the next level.
CJ also holds multiple national and international records for her bubble artistry, including two Singapore Book of Records for the Most Participants Inside a Soap Bubble. She enclosed 8 volunteers in a giant soap bubble in 2010, and enclosed 15 volunteers (who are more than 1.5m tall) five years later. She also holds two Guinness Participation World Records, both achieved in 2018.
Compilation video
I am trying out something new in the Busking Chase: compilation video summaries that introduce a specific busker/busking group. This will not only be the reel format featuring non-musical buskers, but will soon also complement the usual song picks for musical ones (I usually pick two to three per busking session). I last did a compilation video for the Jeff @ Marina Bay series.
