This is probably my first gig chase in an F&B establishment - previously I have went to listen to gig performances at shopping malls, community events, and the Esplanade, but I haven't went to a gig in a food establishment. So in Season 2 of the Gig Chase, I would like to experiment a new sub-category called the Foodies' Gig Chase, where I go to different gig performances in restaurants, food courts, etc. and see how things go from here.

In the first Foodies' Gig Chase, we go to Buzzin' Fridays @ Food Junction Great World. This was a weekly event where diners get to enjoy not just good food (there are ten-over stalls, from yong tau foo and Pepper Kitchen to Western and Thai cuisine), but also live music performed by local busker Tristan Ong (王志文) (@oldboytristan), as well as, for the adults, beer promotions (it's a good time to chill after a grueling week of work with beer, and there were free fries/Korean fried fish cake with purchase of any two beers).

Fun fact: Buzzin' Fridays was supposed to run for a month till mid-June, but was extended to July 2025. Even though this was the only Buzzin' Fridays performance I went to.

Food Junction itself was founded in 1993 with its first outlet at Junction 8, and had revolutionized Singapore’s dining culture with thematic food atriums. It is one of the first few operators to introduce and manage a network of food courts with a good mix of local and international cuisines. Food Junction is under the BreadTalk Group, and its Rewards Card incentive has a lot of perks for its members, including a points system, 10% OFF regular-priced items at all Food Junction, and stamp cards.

Two songs picked from this performance:

  • 像风一样 [originally performed by Joker Xue (薛之谦)]
    • This ballad is an insert song from the Chinese costume drama I Will Never Let You Go (小女花不弃). The wind in the song is used as a metaphor for a lover who is gentle but ultimately untouchable, bringing sudden emotional waves before disappearing without a sound.
  • 你把我灌醉 [originally performed by David Wong (黄大炜)]
    • This is probably the most recognizable song by David Wong. This song is a heartbreaking Mandarin rock ballad about a man who is willing to intoxicate himself to a woman's emotional manipulation.
