说谎 [originally performed by Yoga Lin (林宥嘉)] - Mr. Ng
One of Yoga Lin's signature ballads, this song is from Yoga Lin's second album "Senses Around" (感官/世界). It is used as the theme song for the short film The Angel on a Needle-point (针尖上的天使) (which starred Yoga Lin), and is an insert song for the Mainland Chinese drama Go Lala Go (杜拉拉升职记). This song is about a man who meets his ex who is about to get married, and could only hide his complicated melancholy by lying. The song's English title, "Fairy Tale", acts as a conceptual metaphor for how the man copes with heartbreak.
孤单北半球 [originally performed by Ocean Ou (欧得洋)] - Evan
This is undisputedly Ocean Ou's signature song, and comes from his debut album as a solo musician in 2003. Ocean was known as a virtual artist when he first started his solo music career, and kept his face hidden from public view (using computer-generated 3D models for all his album covers and music videos). It wasn't until five years later that he officially revealed his face. Other artists also chose not to reveal their faces when they first started their music careers, such as Jocie Guo, and more recently, en (Wang Yi-en). However, with the advent of AI-generated music nowadays, it has become harder for musicians to just keep their faces hidden, as the general public can be very skeptical towards virtual singers in my personal opinion.
Song-wise, this song has a handful of covers: a female version performed by Ariel Lin that was an insert song for the Taiwanese idol drama Love Contract (爱情合约) and became as popular as the original version, a Cantonese version performed by Linda Chung, titled "一人晚餐" (translated as "dinner for one"), and a new cover performed by Ocean himself for his new album in 2015.
如燕 [originally performed by Olivia Ong (王俪婷)] - Evan
This song needs no introduction, as it was the theme song for the hit local drama series The Little Nyonya (小娘惹) (2008). The drama series (starring Jeanette Aw and Joanne Peh) became a blockbuster hit, , paved the way for more locally-produced period drama series, and walked home with several awards in the Star Awards 2009. The series dominating viewership ratings at that time, and the theme song (that elegantly blends elements of bossa nova, contemporary pop, and sweeping orchestral strings) became one of the defining hits of the decade.
