Shayne Ko - Paya Lebar Square - 1 May 2025

Away from the General Election hustings and heading to a relatively peaceful, yet bustling location.

Shayne Ko - Paya Lebar Square - 1 May 2025
Shayne busking at Paya Lebar Square on 1 May 2025.

We're taking a little break from going to new busking locations and in the meantime, head to Paya Lebar to watch Shayne busk before the first busking performance at Eunos. And since Paya Lebar is under Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC (the only constituency to have declared a walkover - in three general elections)... we can take a breather from all the hustle and bustle of the General Elections (yes, finally free from party volunteers distributing campaign flyers).

That being said, this was the only three-hour session I covered today. One of the songs picked is 落花如雨, the theme song from the local blockbuster drama serial The Little Nyonya: Emerald Hill (小娘惹之翡翠山), originally performed by Kit Chan (陈洁仪). The song incorporates Nyonya culture and showcases the emotional heritage of the Southeast Asian Chinese community. Blending Western and Southeast Asian instruments, the song also metaphorically represents the ups and downs of the protagonist's fate. Speaking of which, the song is quite apt for the weather of that day, as it started to rain in the late afternoon. 🌧️

Two other songs picked from this busking session are:

  • Dancing Queen (originally performed by ABBA)
    • Widely considered to be the Swedish group's signature song, this disco music song is included in the 1994 Australian film Muriel's Wedding, and the jukebox musical Mamma Mia! (as well as its film adaptation and sequel).
  • Ballade pour Adeline (originally performed by Richard Clayderman)
    • This piece is composed by Paul de Senneville as aa tribute to his newborn daughter Adeline, and remains Clayderman's signature piece. Clayderman (real name Philippe Pagès) was selected out of 20 other pianists to perform the song.
