FattKew busking at HarbourFront MRT station on 30 March 2025.

You may have heard about Fatt Kew (@fattkew_theoneboyband), the solo busker who made news cosplaying as No-Face from Spirited Away (an award-winning anime film from Studio Ghibli), or jamming with a hologram of a popular anime character (iykyk) during his busking performances.

This time, he is cosplaying as Howl from Howl's Moving Castle, another Ghibli film about a girl who was cursed into old age and must find a way to break the curse with the help of Howl and his friends. (Fun fact: Howl is voiced by the well-known actor Takuya Kimura.) With a ztar (an equivalent of a guitar-like MIDI controller) on hand, you might catch Fatt-as-Howl belting out beloved Ghibli tunes as he stands on a life-size music box, from My Neighour Totoro to Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea. Or catch him and Hatsune Miku rocking the streets with a relatively intricate Jam Gym. (Though, I'm not sure if I would stand on a rotating platform for two hours, my head might spin 😅)

As usual, here are two songs I've picked from this busking session:

  • A Town with an Ocean View [from Kiki's Delivery Service (魔女の宅急便) (1989)]
  • Merry-Go-Round of Life [from Howl's Moving Castle (ハウルの動く城) (2004)]

A Ghibli film wouldn't be epic without the music of the melodic maestro Joe Hisaishi (久石 譲), a longtime composer for films directed and animated by the legendary Hayao Miyazaki. In fact, he scored the music for all but one of Miyazaki's films. Outside of Ghibli, he also composed for live-action works, including from South Korea and China.
